Apprenticeships on Increase

IT Firm Indigo Latest to Offer Placements

In a world of spiralling student debt and university graduates struggling to secure employment, work-based learning is making a comeback.

Apprenticeships offer a very attractive and viable alternative and are set to play a fundamental part of the government’s strategy in tackling youth unemployment. A reported 500,000 people started apprenticeships in 2010 / 2011 – a 63% increase on the previous year, and it is predicted that this figure will continue to increase.

Local leading IT firm Indigo Technologies (Indigo) is one of the latest companies to offer apprenticeship placements. Sean Thomson, Director of Indigo Technologies said: “Apprenticeship schemes provide a win-win situation for employers and employees alike.  They are a great way for companies to harness fresh new talent and address their skills gaps, whilst providing an environment in which people learn on the job, develop skills and knowledge, gain qualifications and earn money at the same time.

“Our Sales Manager Aileen Scott, who is a Rising Star finalist for the second consecutive year in the Northern Star Awards, joined through an apprenticeship scheme four years ago. She has proved to be an invaluable and incredibly loyal employee and champions such schemes as a result of her success.”

Hannah Bisset has joined Indigo under the nationwide Microsoft Apprenticeship Scheme to become a certified IT specialist, while Laura Davidson takes on an apprenticeship in the firm’s sales team.

Commenting on her decision to undertake an apprenticeship, Hannah said: “I weighed up the options available to me and the apprenticeship scheme was the clear winner. I wasn’t prepared to spend four years at university without gaining any practical on the job experience.  I am looking forward to learning key business skills, building up an in depth knowledge, and most importantly having a guaranteed job at the end of it. It really is the fastest and most effective way to kick-start your career in this current job climate”.
