Indigo one step closer to employer of the year accolade

Indigo, which is headquartered in Aberdeen, is celebrating after being shortlisted for employer of the year in the Grampian Awards for Business Excellence 2014. Directors Sean Thomson and David Senior were nominated by the team of 10 employees who work closely with them to deliver their award-winning IT support solutions.

Sean and David launched Indigo in 2005 with a vision … but no office, no employees and no staff. Less than 10 years later, they have a suite of offices in Aberdeen’s prestigious west-end, more than 120 clients and a happy, motivated and enthusiastic team.

Sean said: “From the outset, we placed a huge emphasis on customer service – we knew that happy clients would be loyal clients … but we also knew that happy employees would be loyal employees. When we began to recruit staff, it was vital for us to create a happy workplace where our employees would feel valued and motivated but, most importantly where they actually wanted to work.”

And it’s not difficult to see why the team is happy: flexible hours, home-working, weekly lunchtime get-togethers, personal development plans and, vitally for IT professionals, Sean and David ensure that the technology and equipment they are working with is the latest on the market: they have the latest laptops, smartphones and tablets and are fully trained in how to use them.

Then there are the more unusual benefits that really set them apart: monthly meals out, team building, games nights, a barista coffee machine in the kitchen, birthday cakes, beauty spa vouchers, on-site massage, employee-tailored gifts and bonuses and, of course, the much-anticipated annual summer extravaganza for staff and their families at Sean’s house, complete with barbecue, bouncy castle and water slides.

But more than anything, it is that they never take the staff for granted.

IT engineer Rob Napier, who has been with the company for more than six years, said, “Sean and David work so hard themselves that their work ethic sets a great example to us and makes us want to go that extra mile. There’s not the ‘them and us’ attitude that you get in a lot of companies. They have fostered a real sense of camaraderie between us and they are always willing to muck in. If we need help, we’re not scared to ask – and they will always roll their sleeves up and help out.”

The results of the Grampian Award for Business Enterprise will be announced on Thursday 26 June at a gala dinner.
