Aberdeen based IT firm Indigo Technologies are supporting Scottish Apprenticeship Week 2016 by speaking to young students about apprenticeships in IT at a number of local Aberdeenshire events this week.
Both Aileen Scott, Sales Director at Indigo, and Kirsten Reid, who is currently serving a one year apprenticeship at the IT firm in place of her third year studying Computer Science at Robert Gordon’s University, travelled to Bucksburn Careers Fair yesterday to talk to students ranging between the ages of 16 – 18 about working in the IT industry and the benefits of Indigo’s apprenticeship scheme. Being a heavily male dominated industry, Aileen and Kirsten challenged the IT norm by speaking to the young students about Kirsten’s experience as a female apprentice at Indigo, as well as how important the apprenticeship scheme is to the business.
Stephanie Murroes, a school student at the Bucksburn Careers Fair commented,
"Aileen is a regular speaker at student events, talking to Aberdeen University students this week about starting a business in IT as well as being committed to speaking to students on the Computer Science course at Robert Gordon’s about a career in IT, something she has been taking part in for the last five years.
Beginning next week, Scottish Apprenticeship Week highlights the benefits that apprenticeships bring to businesses, young people and the Scottish economy. Kirsten commented, “My apprenticeship with Indigo has already given me fantastic real world experience, by allowing me to work alongside experienced staff and gain job-specific skills. I have learnt a lot already in the 5 months I have been with Indigo, building up my knowledge which will help me kick-start my career in the IT industry in a couple of years time when I have graduated. I would thoroughly recommend an apprenticeship!”
